Database

Establishment of a database on cases treated by all participating clinics.

As a deliverable, the STARS project has to provide a database of the cases the PU clinics have dealt with. The database on clinical case outcomes is an innovative product, through which students, researchers and teaching staff may transfer their knowledge and skills for the benefit of their community, while at the same time ensuring their learning, teaching and research activities benefit from real-life cases and interactions in a digital context. In fact, by twinning with partner institutions, universities can share knowledge, innovation and best practices with each other with the goal of teaching law students how to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to real life problems of consumers and partners within civil society.

After the set up of the criteria adopted to classify cases, each Partner University collected the data, summarized the case and identified the keywords in English in order to make the database usable by the European clinician community.

Guidelines

Quality measures for legal clinics will consist of criteria formalizing the teaching methods and creating performance indicators in the field of legal clinical teaching.

The drafting of quality guidelines on European clinical education is a key point of the project as these guidelines do not exist at the European level (they formalized in the US but the American system deeply needs to be adapted to the European context as the US legal system hugely differs from those of European continental countries and since the educational context is also completely different on the two continents). European standardization of the process is therefore becoming a necessity. At this stage of the project, a first proposal is ready. This proposal was drafted by the Olomouc team which has been working on the guidelines since the beginning of the project. Several discussions took place with regard to the content of the draft in the frame of the STARS network but also with the support of other organisations.

A first proposal was orally presented during the General meeting of the project partners which was held on the 2nd of July in Brescia. The discussion was continued at the annual ENCLE conference that took place in Turin (20th to 21st of September 2018 which was attended by most of project partners) and in an ENCLE workshop held on the 24th of January 2019 at the University of Valencia, where the STARS proposal was presented and discussed. This proposal has been extensively discussed during the general meetings in Luxembourg (9th of July 2019) and Rome (12th of February 2020).
